Ginseng & Immunity

Cancer has been on the rise in industrialized countries. The major contributing factor seems to be the modern industrial environment.

For some years now, many research scientists throughout the world have been engaged in extensive studies for a cure. However, its etiology and pathophysiology have not been clearly understood as yet. Furthermore, the major difficulties in treating cancer patients arise from the fact that cancer treating drugs lack specificity. That is, their cytotoxic activities affect both normal and cancer cells. When normal cells are destroyed, patients experience detrimental effects.

Ginseng & Sports

Korean Ginseng & Athletic Performance

History: It is said that in order to test for true ginseng, two persons walk together, one with a piece of the root in his Ginseng & SportsGinseng & Sportsmouth and the other without. If at the end of five li (two miles), the one with the ginseng in his mouth does not feel tired, while the other is out of breath, the plant is true.

Constituents of Ginseng: The root of ginseng contains several steroid-like compounds such as panaxatriol. A steroid is a chemical compound with the same basic structure as the sex hormones and the adrenal cortical hormones, of which estrogen, testosterone, cortisone, and DCA are prime examples. Testosterone, the male sex hormone, is found in different proportions in the male and female body; and acts as the body's natural anabolic.

Effects of Ginseng on Sexual Functions

Korean Panax ginseng has been widely used in the treatment of impotence as well as general gynecological problems. Women who experience severe cramps associated with menstruation take ginseng to ease their pains. It has also been believed that ginseng relieves menopausal symptoms.

In the treatment of impotent patients, an active ginseng component, protisol, exhibited testosterone-like effects. When ginseng extract was administered to oligospennia patients (impaired sperm production), a significant improvement in sperm production was also observed. In addition, there was a considerable increase in sperm motility in response to ginseng (I. I. Brekhman, I. M. Popov, D. Kakiwoochi, K. Shida, J.Ishikami, M. Yamamoto, J. W. Kim).
